Shear Connector Stud Manufacturer in India
Shear connector studs — also called shear studs, headed studs or shear stud connectors — are welded to the top flange of a steel beam or girder and cast into the concrete slab above it. They carry the horizontal shear between steel and concrete, so the beam and slab act as one composite member instead of sliding over each other.
S.R. Forgings manufactures headed shear connector studs at Focal Point, Ludhiana, to ISO 13918 and to customer drawing. Diameters run from 13 mm up to 1¼ inch (31.75 mm) and lengths up to 1016 mm (40 inch), which is longer than most suppliers hold as standard. Ceramic ferrules are supplied with the studs. Punch Shear Resistance (PSR) Studs
Large headed studs welded to flat steel rails, used as punching shear reinforcement in flat slabs around columns in place of stirrups and column capitals. PSR studs made in Ludhiana are supplied to the United States.

Standard or Custom Shear Studs
Most composite floors and bridge decks use studs straight from the ISO 13918 tables. Some designs do not — deep slabs, thick haunches, heavy bridge decks and replacement work on older structures often call for a size the tables do not cover. We make both.

Where Shear Connector Studs Are Used
Shear connector studs are used wherever a steel frame is made to act compositely with concrete. Because the studs transfer the horizontal shear between the two materials, the steel and concrete work as a single structural member, allowing shallower beams and longer spans than either could achieve alone.
- Composite floor beams in multi-storey buildings, data centres and industrial structures — usually welded through profiled metal decking onto the top flange before the slab is poured.
- Composite bridge decks — welded directly to the top flange of plate girders and box girders.
- Steel-concrete composite columns and encased sections.
- Flat slabs — where the job is punching shear around a column rather than composite action, the answer is PSR studs on rails. See shear connector studs vs PSR studs.
Why Engineers Specify Headed Shear Studs
- Lighter steelwork. Composite action lets a smaller beam carry the same load, or the same beam span further.
- Known capacity per stud. The design resistance of a headed stud is set out in EN 1994 and AISC 360, so the number of studs follows directly from the design. See shear stud capacity in kN.
- Fast to install. Each stud is drawn-arc welded with a stud welding gun and a ceramic ferrule in a single short cycle, and can be welded through galvanised decking.
- Checked on site. Welds are checked by visual inspection of the weld collar and a bend test on sample studs, so a poor weld is found before the concrete goes in.

Questions Buyers Ask
Are shear studs and shear connectors the same thing?
Yes. Shear connector stud, shear stud, headed stud and shear stud connector all describe the same part: a round steel shank with a forged head, welded to a steel beam and cast into concrete. "Shear connector" on its own can also mean channel or angle connectors, which are a different product.
What is the largest shear stud you make?
Up to 1¼ inch (31.75 mm) diameter and up to 1016 mm (40 inch) long. Sizes outside the ISO 13918 tables are made to your drawing.
What steel are your shear studs made from?
Low carbon steel: SAE 1010 for smaller diameters and SAE 1018 for larger diameters. Low carbon is deliberate — the stud has to weld to the beam flange in under a second without the weld zone hardening and cracking. A shear stud is not a high tensile part and should never be replaced with an 8.8 or 10.9 bolt of the same diameter.
Do you supply ceramic ferrules with the studs?
Yes. Ceramic ferrules are supplied with the studs. Tell us whether the studs will be welded directly to the flange or through decking.
